About SIS Project Phase 1
 


Supporting the transformation of the student experience

Recognizing the needs of the campus community, UC Berkeley has made a strategic decision to replace its constellation of aging, disparate, and internally built and maintained student systems with a modern, nimble and effective vendor-supported system that will include admissions, enrollment, registration, financial aid, student accounts, and advising. The SIS Replacement project has strong support from students, faculty, staff and campus leadership and is seen as one of the highest administrative priorities on our campus.  To get a sense of the compelling case for change, view an overview diagram of existing systems to get an idea of the scope and complexity of this project.

Our focus in Phase 1 has been to put in place what we need to create a strong and stable plan for renewing our core student systems and to do so in a manner that is as transparent to our campus and inclusive to as many stakeholders as is possible. To that end, we solicited feedback from across the campus in developing the requirements for the new system. That process produced 78,884 ratings in a survey tool called DecisionDirector and represented input from 596 students, faculty, and staff in 115 departments across campus.  We also collected additional feedback through 27 business process workshops and 40 individual and group interviews.

We are now in the process of completing Phase 1 and transitioning to Phase 2 (the project implementation phase), having completed one of the project’s critical milestones: contracting with the company that will provide the system’s software -- Oracle® (PeopleSoft Campus Solutions). We are also in contract negotiations with a consulting firm—the System Implementer (SI)—who will partner with us in rolling out the new system in way that meets our campus’ needs.  A critical factor in evaluating the SI is the firm’s demonstrated success in implementing systems of comparable size and complexity at other universities.  For information on our vendor evaluation and selection process, read our FAQs.  For information on the cross-functional leadership team who worked together collaboratively during this critical stage, read about our Phase 1 project Governance.

Also included in our transition to Phase 2 is the creation of a project team, which includes a Project Management Office to oversee the strategy, planning, budget, and communications for the project.
